Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI) in Association with COMEDK organised one day National Seminar on “Transforming Indian Post Graduation Medical Education-An Introspection and Expectation” on 16th March, 2022 at Hotel Taj MG Road, Bengaluru. His Excellency Shri Thaawar Chand Gehlot, Hon’ble Governor of Karnataka inaugurated the National Seminar. Dr. S N P Singh, National President, Indian Medical Association was also delivered the Guest of Honour Address.
As you are aware that the landscape in medical education has gone through tremendous changes. In the traditional teaching of medical education, more emphasis was given to knowledge acquisition. However, it is becoming more evident that knowledge application is more important than knowledge acquisition. Keeping this changed scenario, National Medical Commission has introduced competency based medical education both at the under-graduate and post-graduate level. Further because of Covid pandemic, there was a necessity for bringing about a change in the teaching and learning methods wherein information technology tools were made use of for teaching the students. In addition, National Medical Commission has introduced the concept of simulation labs for skill development which ensures that the student has requisite skills at the end of his graduation so that he can practice the field of medicine more confidently.
National Medical Commission has stipulated certain minimum mandatory requirements of human resources, infrastructure, and clinical load to ensure that adequate training of the students by well-trained teachers. The graded responsibilities given to the students along with monitoring of their progress makes the student acquire necessary knowledge and skills at the end of their training.
When National Medical Commission is bringing in sweeping changes in under-graduate and post-graduate medical regulations, we also have diplomate in national board awarding DNB students who are trained in corporate hospitals, degrees which are now considered equivalent to MD/MS. Further, DNB in super specialties is now being considered equivalent to DM/Mch. It is a paradoxical situation where in NMC is bringing MSR requirements to ensure adequate training in the medical institutions, while as NBE is allowing training in corporate hospitals. Further, the fee structure between the two courses is widely different, which will adversely affect the medical institutions both in its survival and implementation of CBME. In this scenario, there is a necessity to have a pragmatic view of the entire gamut of training imparted by the medical institutions awarding MD/MS and corporate hospitals training the students for the award of DNB degree.
In this National Seminar we were having an Inaugural Session followed with three technical session and discuss all the above-mentioned matters covering the following topics: –
